Training Your Cat – Understanding Their Behaviors and What You Can Do About It
Training your cat should be one of the first things that you should do as soon as your pet arrives at home. When you start training your cat as early as possible, it will also help you prevent and avoid problems early on.
Like other animals, cats have behaviors that might not be favorable when they are at home with you or the family. Scratching for example, is something that cats do normally but it could be disastrous to your new furniture or some of your priced furnishings. So training your cat earlier in time is ideal to make you both live in harmony.
Male cats also have the habit marking their territory with their urine, although female cats also do the practice. This is their normal behavior but you can avoid this by sending your cat to a veterinarian and let her be spayed, or neutered for male cats. This will put an end to their being territorial.
Cats can also be undesirable neighbors when they are in heat and the male cats gather and create those annoying noises. This can also be addressed by spaying your female cat or neutering your male cats. When they also tend to roam and damage the neighbor’s gardens, also make sure to watch them and bring them back to your yard.
Like dogs and other animals, training your cat needs extra patience, as they will never understand anything you tell them. Rewarding and praising are two most important things you have to always keep in mind when training your cat.
It is also important to give them alternative. You can prevent them from scratching your favorite furniture by giving them alternatives like a scratching post. When you see her scratching the post, you can them give her some reward or praise her for the good job. It can be in the form of food treats, petting or giving her her favorite toy.
Training your cat to use the litter box is also another important training that you can give to your cats. When you train your cat to use the litter box, always remember though that cats do not like dirty litter boxes so take time to clean them and add new litter every after they use them. Sometimes the location of the litter may also affect their litter habits. The type of litter used can also be a factor in their litter habits. In choosing the litter, it may require you to experiment. If you frequently encounter problems with your cat’s litter habits, make sure also that your pet has no health problems. A regular check up with the veterinarian would be of great help in determining the health of your pet.
It is also important to note that when training your cats, punishment is not an option. Punishing your cat physically is not only inhumane but will only lead to more aggressive behavior like biting or scratching to defend herself. With this, it is important to get away with punishing you cat.
